Owner managed and Pietermaritzburg based, with our own workshop and installation teams, supplying pumps big or small for agricultural, borehole, industrial and household applications.
Brief history
From a home-based business to the Pietermaritzburg CBD.
Sherwood Pumps was established by Richard Sherwood in October 1999 and began in a home-based setting, before relocating to larger premises in Pietermaritzburg, first Greyling Street and later 2 Haworth Road in Mkondeni, to accommodate growth.
Today the company is located at 16 Stantial Street, within the Central Business District. That was a deliberate move: it puts us where our customers can reach us easily, whether they are collecting a seal on the way to a job or bringing a pump in for assessment.
The company is owner managed. Richard completed his training with Stewarts and Lloyds, worked his way up to branch manager at the Richards Bay office and then general sales manager in the Durban regional office, before leaving to open the first Orbit Pumps branch in KwaZulu-Natal in 1994. He opened Sherwood Pumps’ doors five years later.
Fully fledged workshop
We can test it, not just guess at it.
Our workshop team specialises in pumps and related enquiries, complemented by an expert welding division for custom fabrications.
Equipped with a range of advanced problem-solving tools, we service everything from borehole pumps to centrifugal and multi-stage units. Our dedicated testing bay handles up to 11kW, which lets us accurately diagnose a pump fault, or confirm that a unit is performing as it should, before anyone commits to a repair or a replacement.
We also run our own installation team. When the workshop’s workload exceeds capacity, we use trusted sub-contractors so that service standards and turnaround times hold.

Group Five / Spring Grove Dam
Supplied, manufactured and installed three rafts fitted with six submersible pumps, with motor control, cable, pipe and trenching including manhole rings, all run by diesel generator sets that we supplied and installed.
Department of Agriculture
Supplied and installed electric centrifugal borehole pumps for rural communities, run by portable gensets, including tanks, tank stands, control panels and piping.
uThukela District Municipality
Supply and installation of production boreholes for the Driefontein complex, covering the electrical and mechanical installation of line shaft borehole pumps, control panels, electric motors and pump houses.
Umgeni Water, Bridge Road
Supplied and installed two Gorman-Rupp self-priming high heat pump sets for the main sewage pump station, including WEG 45kW motors, variable speed control panels, an electronic flow meter and pipework modifications.
Greytown Waste Water Works
Removed the existing pump sets and installed bigger pumps and motors with new base plates, modifications to pipework and an upgraded control panel.
Cornubia Shell & shopping centre
Back-up water supply and booster pump system, including filtration and UV light installation. This is the same kind of system we fit in office parks, malls and high-rise buildings.
Cornubia school project
Supply and installation of seven booster pump systems, associated pipework and rainwater harvesting.
Estcourt Mall
Supply and installation of DAB Maxi box pressure booster pumps and tanks, keeping water pressure steady across the centre.
Zambeef, Zambia
Our first export: dairy slurry pumps supplied as Gorman-Rupp self-priming pump sets complete with pipes, pressure and vacuum gauges and a VSD control panel.
We have also supplied and serviced pumps for Illovo, Noodsberg and Eston sugar mills, the UCL sugar mill, Nestlé, Hulamin, Aberdare Cables, Truda Foods and a number of other industrial plants in and around Pietermaritzburg and Natal.
